In order to reduce climate change and protect the earth, sustainable change is required. Trees therefore endeavors to make the greatest possible contribution through its products and external commitment.

It is not just climate change that is troubling the earth and its inhabitants. Littering, extinction of species, overfishing, deforestation, forest death, soil, water and air pollution all contribute to this.

The European Union and the United Nations have now recognized that the way of doing business must therefore change – although their sustainability goals can be debated in terms of time and content. While the EU withs its Green New Deal aims to be the first continent to become climate-neutral by 2050, the UN is trying to take sustainability and climate change into account with various measures such as the Sustainable Development Goals (2015).

What does sustainability mean?

The United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development advocated sustainability in the Brundtland Report of 1987 and defined it as follows: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

However, this coining of the term is ambiguous and fuzzy, so that to this day there are many views about what sustainability actually means. Politically and scientifically, for example, there are different camps that advocate strong or weak sustainability.

Originally, sustainability primarily means economic systems that are interwoven with the ecosystems in a stable and permanent manner. Effectiveness, consistency and reuse become important objectives.

Trees not only wants to meet its responsibility when it comes to sustainability, but also to act as a role model. First of all, the young Viennese company therefore manufactures its products from hemp plants that are organically grown in the Neusiedler See Seewinkel National Park and are certified by the Austria Bio Guarantee.

Sustainability of hemp farms and plants

The hemp plant itself is extremely sustainable. Among other things, it improves the quality of the earth and promotes the yield of the subsequent harvest by binding CO2 due to its deep roots in the earth.

The hemp farms with which Trees collaborates are also sustainable in various areas. For example, one hectare of vegetation binds 13 to 14 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, which is roughly equivalent to the efficiency of a rainforest of the same size. In addition, the farms use natural irrigation systems and no pesticides.

Thanks to the CO2 extraction process that is used during processing, the entire organic plant blossom is preserved without leaving any residues in the end product. All parts of the plant are used, be it the stem, the root or the seeds. Each and every one of them can be used to produce textiles, paper, ropes, bioplastics, biofuels, food supplements, cosmetics or the like.

About bees and trees

Furthermore Trees works with the charity One Tree Planted to regenerate forests and reduce the effects of climate change. For every purchase of a CBD oil, Trees plants a tree, especially where it is urgently needed. Each and every one of these trees is able to absorb around 12.5 tons of CO2 throughout its life.

In the near future, Trees will also be working with local beekeepers to enable them to breed and maintain bee colonies. Especially since male hemp plants, depending on their age and size, produce a lot of pollen which is vital for the bees. Hemp can provide important nutrients for various species of bees during floral scarcity and can help support the ecosystem.

For an environmentally friendly business

The young Viennese company is also in the process of receiving the certificate for climate neutrality from TÜV Austria. This will confirm that Trees not only avoids greenhouse gases, but also actively removes them from the atmosphere through their production.

Finally, Trees campaigns for the revitalization of rural regions in Austria, Hungary and Germany, which often suffer from emigration and urbanization. Tress helps them to switch from an environmentally unfriendly economy to a sustainable one.

It is uncertain whether it will be enough if more and more individual companies operate sustainably in order to prevent a climate catastrophe and its consequences. Perhaps deeper structural interventions are necessary. Until this is resolved, Trees is doing whatever in their power to not only help people with their sustainable and organic products to lead healthier lifes but also to support the entire planet.
